Eovaldi Claims First Complete Game Shutout of 2025
Nate Makes History
Nathan Eovaldi continued to build on his Texas Rangers legacy Tuesday night, as he posted the first complete game shutout of the 2025 MLB season.
The Alvin, Texas, native re-signed with the Rangers over the summer for a new 3-year/$75 Million contract, and has looked worth every dime through two games. The 35-year old starter has posted a 1.20 ERA, 0.47 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts through 15.0 innings.
The performance was the fifth complete game, and third complete game shutout in Eovaldi’s career. It marked the first time a Rangers pitcher has posted a complete game shutout, since Eovaldi’s own performance against the Yankees back in April of 2023.
Performance
Eovaldi came out measured at the start of the game, understanding the depleted Rangers bullpen was in need of a quality start following a short outing by Kumar Rocker the night before. Weak contact would be the early formula for Eovaldi, as he would go on to rack up a career-high 14 induced groundouts.
The Rangers offense would be largely silenced, outside of a solo home run by Wyatt Langford in the first inning, leaving Eovaldi to protect a narrow margin throughout the entire night. Despite the pressure, Eovaldi would keep the Reds bats in check, allowing only four hits and zero walks.
Eovaldi’s cutter and splitter would emerge the second time through the Reds lineup, as he rattled off five straight strikeouts from the third onward. His fastball velocity also steadily increased through the performance reaching a high of 95 mph.
In the end, it came down to a showdown against Reds young super-star Elly de la Cruz with a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the 9th, who Eovaldi jammed with a cutter up and in to get the final groundout of the night, capping off a stellar 99-pitch performance. The win pushes the Rangers to 4-2 on the young season, and sets up a rubber-match tomorrow afternoon where the offense will look to kick things back into gear.
