Frisco RoughRiders Season Opener Recap: Hooks Edge Out 7-5 Win
Frisco, Texas – The threat of rain during game time didn’t keep 6,126 fans from the Frisco RoughRiders season Opener. The RoughRiders kicked off their season at Riders Field against the Corpus Christi Hooks (Astros). The RoughRiders pitching staff struck out 12 Hooks but they dropped game one by a final of 7-5.

Pitching Breakdown
Winston Santos took the mound for the RoughRiders in the season opener, with his fastball topping out at 96 MPH and hitting 97 MPH once. His final line against the Hooks was 2.2 innings pitched, 2 runs allowed, 4 hits, 1 walk, and 6 strikeouts, throwing 56 pitches, 36 of them strikes. The RoughRiders pitching staff as a whole struck out 12 Hooks batters, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win. Ben Anderson committed the first balk of the RoughRiders’ season, with velocities recorded at 89, 92, and 88 MPH when I looked at the scoreboard between taking pictures.
At the plate and on the bases
The RoughRiders offense scored 5 runs on 7 hits, showing speed on the basepaths with 4 stolen bases. Frainyer Chavez led the way, swiping two bases, while Alejandro Osuna and Jason Hatcher each stole one. Osuna also walked in his first at-bat to lead off the game, then swiped his first stolen base of the season, which was also the first for the RoughRiders.
Catcher Cooper Johnson made an early impact, hitting the RoughRiders’ first home run of the season. It was a 2-run shot to give the RoughRiders a lead in the bottom of the 2nd. The lead didn’t last as the Hooks scored two runs of their own in the top of the 3rd.
Sebastian Walcott recorded his first hit of the year with an RBI double, registering an exit velocity of 68 MPH. Josh Hatcher was the only RoughRiders player with multiple hits, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI. Cam Cauley displayed a strong arm in the field on a double play.
Notable Moments
Despite the offensive efforts, the RoughRiders couldn’t overcome the Hooks, who secured a 7-5 victory. The game featured several firsts of the season for the RoughRiders, including Osuna’s steal, Johnson’s homer, and Anderson’s balk, setting the tone for an eventful season opener.
Looking Ahead
The RoughRiders will look to even the series in Game 2 of this short 3-game set against the Hooks. LHP Mitch Bratt takes the mound for Frisco tonight, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM at Riders Field.
