Keeping it in the Family: Rangers Sign Fireballer Breyner Figuereo in Genius Post-Release Move

Texas signed Breyner Figuereo, a 17-year-old lefty hitting 97 mph. The former outfielder joins his brother, Gleider, in the Rangers’ promising farm system.

Talk about a family reunion! The Texas Rangers reached an agreement with 17-year-old LHP Breyner Figuereo, the younger brother of Gleider Figuereo—who, by the way, just clocked in at No. 28 on The Prospect Times Top 30 Rangers prospect list released today.

His father was also a pitcher in the Texas Rangers system from 2002-2004.

This isn't just a feel-good story about siblings; it’s a high-upside gamble that cost the Rangers zero international bonus pool space. Because Breyner was released by another club, his $100,000 signing bonus is exempt from the 2026 pool. That is a good thing because the Rangers already spent most of its allocation early in the signing period.

From Struggles at the plate to Heat on the Mound

Breyner originally entered the professional ranks as an outfielder with the Chicago Cubs, but the bat just didn't come around in the Dominican Summer League.

During his 40-game stint with DSL Cubs Blue, he posted a slash line of .192/.287/.272 with a .559 OPS. He managed one HR, 15 RBIs, 17 walks, and 35 strikeouts.

The Cubs officially released him on Feb. 3, but instead of packing it in, Figuereo headed to the mound. The results? So far, Electrifying.

The Viral Clip: A video recently surfaced showing Figuereo touching 97 mph with a delivery is pretty clean for a converted position player.

That video sent social media into a frenzy, but thanks to their established relationship with the Figuereo family, Texas locked him down.

A 17-year-old touching 97 MPH is insane. I can't wait to see how the Rangers’ staff helps him develop.
