Mike Maddux has declined to return as the Texas Rangers' pitching coach for the 2026 season, ending his second stint with the team. Maddux is set to join the Los Angeles Angels, marking his departure from the Rangers.

Maddux rejoined the Rangers in 2023 as part of manager Bruce Bochy’s staff. During his first year, the team posted a 4.28 ERA. That number slightly increased to 4.35 in 2024, but in 2025, the team’s pitching improved significantly, finishing with a league-best 3.47 team ERA. Over his three seasons with the Rangers, starters posted a 3.90 ERA, the fifth-best in the league. Maddux’s impact on key starters—such as Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi, Tyler Mahle and a career year from Jack Leiter—was evident, helping transform a team not traditionally known for its pitching into one of the best in the league.

The Rangers offered Maddux a new contract to return, but he declined, choosing instead to head west to Orange County. Maddux’s tenure with the Rangers spanned 10 seasons across two stints, and he became a fan favorite for his signature gesture — placing a hand on a pitcher’s shoulder during mound visits. In 2023, he earned his first World Series ring with Texas after coming close with manager Ron Washington in 2011. Maddux now leaves the Rangers as a World Series champion.

President of Baseball Operations Chris Young praised Maddux’s contributions and stated: “Mike has played a major role in some of the best teams in Rangers history, including our first World Series title in 2023. We wish him the best.”

Four weeks after naming Skip Schumaker as the new manager, the Rangers are actively seeking coaches to round out their staff. One candidate to watch is Jordan Tiegs, who has risen through the ranks since joining the organization in 2019. Originally hired as the AZL team’s pitching coach after coaching at Indiana State, Tiegs was promoted to bullpen coach for the Rangers in 2024.
