The Rangers announced on Sunday they were promoting their #1 prospect, Sebastian Walcott, to the AA Frisco RoughRiders after a standout summer. The 18-year old will now join Frisco as they prepare for playoff baseball later this month, and will look help them win their second Texas League Championship in three years.
Walcott joined the Rangers organization as their marque signing in the 2023 Amateur International Free Agent class, and has quickly justified his $3.2M signing bonus. In 2023, Walcott saw action across three levels in the Dominican Summer League, Arizona Complex League, and High-A, where he crushed 7HR and 24 RBIs across only 48 games.
Walcott began the 2024 MiLB campaign back in High-A with the Hickory Crawdads where the 18-year old has been one of the youngest players at the level. He got off to a slow start in April, hitting only 0.191 and striking out in 36% of his ABs, as he struggled with breaking ball recognition and general over aggressiveness at the plate. However, Walcott has shown a willingness to adjust and grow, both in his technical approach along with his physical mannerisms and maturity. The second half of 2024 has seen Walcott embrace a more selective approach at the plate, where his natural power and talent has begun to shine through. Walcott enters tonight slashing 0.261/0.343/0.441, and his 50 XBH (10HR, 31 2B, and 9 3B) leads the entirety of the High-A South Atlantic League.
Sebastian Walcott will join the RoughRiders as they finish their regular season on the road in Amarillo. Fans will be able to see Walcott make his AA home and playoff debut on Thursday September 19, as the RoughRiders host the Midland RockHounds in Game 2 of the Divisional Series.
