Rangers Sign Former MVP to Minor League Deal Thursday Morning

The Texas Rangers have agreed on a minor league contract with former MVP and 17 season veteran Andrew McCutchen

News broke Thursday morning that Texas Rangers have agreed to a one-year minor league contract with former MVP Andrew McCutchen who is vying to play his 18th MLB season. If McCutchen makes the Rangers roster and meets all incentives, he will receive $2.5 million for the season.

The 39-year-old outfielder Andrew McCutchen will vie for a spot on the Rangers roster with this deal. He could serve as a viable platoon option, either as a designated hitter with Joc Pederson or filling in for Evan Carter against left-handed pitching as both have struggled mightily in their careers vs Southpaws.

Last season, McCutchen hit .267 against left-handers with a .353 on-base percentage and a .743 on-base plus slugging percentage. He also ranked in the 92nd percentile in chase rate, an exceedingly low mark, and had a 12.2% walk rate, placing him in the 88th percentile. Reducing strikeouts is a pivotal goal for the Rangers in 2026 to improve their lineup, and McCutchen significantly addresses those needs.

McCutchen, at the tail end of his 17-season career, has amassed 332 career home runs, 1,152 RBIs and an .822 OPS. Beyond the statistics, the five-time All-Star's veteran presence in the clubhouse is invaluable. With 17 Seasons of experience playing for teams including the Pirates, Giants, Yankees, and Phillies, McCutchen is well-positioned to mentor young players in the clubhouse such as Evan Carter and Wyatt Langford as they are still just beginning their professional careers.
