Joc Pederson: The Texas Rangers’ New Fan Favorite?
ARLINGTON, TX — Today, the Texas Rangers officially welcomed their new designated hitter, Joc Pederson, in a introductory press conference at Globe Life Field. The 33-year-old, who will turn 34 in April, signed a two-year contract valued at $37 million, which includes a mutual option for 2027 and an opt-out clause after the 2025 season.
Pederson, who has signed his fifth consecutive one-year deal allowing him to re-enter free agency, brings a power boost to the Rangers’ lineup from the left-hand side. Over the last three seasons, he has averaged 129 games, playing for the San Francisco Giants in 2022 and 2023, followed by a stint with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2024.
His performance has been consistent, hitting 23 home runs in 2022, 15 in 2023, and another 23 in 2024. Notably, in 2024, Pederson batted .275/.393/.515/.908 (101-367) with 23 home runs, 17 doubles, and 64 RBI in 132 games for Arizona. His stats placed him among the top National League designated hitters in OPS (3rd), home runs (4th), and RBI (5th).
Pederson’s career has been highlighted by his prowess against right-handed pitching. His stats show a significant platoon split. He has a .210/.300/.330 (78 wRC+) against left-handed pitchers, suggesting that his usage might be limited against southpaws.
Adding to the excitement, Pederson reunites with his former Dodgers teammate Corey Seager in the Rangers’ lineup. His role will predominantly be as the designated hitter, but he could see time in the outfield in emergencies. Despite the possibility of rotation at the DH spot, Pederson is expected to be a regular against right-handed pitchers.
During his press conference, Pederson made a statement that Rangers fans loved. He stated, “We played the Astros in the World Series [in 2021 with the Braves]. They’ve put together a nice little run. It’s coming to an end. It’s time for us to take over the West.” He also shared a personal note, explaining his choice of jersey number four, corresponding to the number of his children.
Pederson’s signing not only brings back memories of his contributions to the Dodgers’ 2020 World Series win at Globe Life Field but also adds another layer of championship experience to the Rangers, who are looking to build on their recent success after winning the World Series in 2023.
With Pederson on board, the Rangers are might just have the best lineup in the AL West.
