Robert Garcia Earns Win for Mexico in World Baseball Classic Debut

Garcia was perfect in his inning of relief.

Texas Rangers reliever Robert Garcia got the win for Mexico in his World Baseball Classic debut on Friday, March 6. He retired all three batters he faced in the seventh inning in Mexico's 8-2 victory over Great Britain in Houston.

Garcia entered the game with the teams tied 1-1, after Great Britain evened the score in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Mexico went down in order in the top of the seventh. The Rangers left-hander only needed nine pitches to work through the inning. Garcia got Ian Lewis Jr. to fly out to left-center field, then he struck out Trayce Thompson on three pitches, and ended his relief appearance by getting Jazz Chisholm Jr. to ground out to second base.

Next up for Mexico (1-0) is a meeting with Brazil (0-2), which has lost to the United States and Italy in Pool B play. The two teams will face off on Sunday, March 8 at 7 p.m. in Houston.

Garcia is entering his second season with the Rangers, and is competing for the closer role after converting nine save opportunities in 2025.
