Texas Rangers make two more minor league signings

The Texas Rangers have made two additional minor league signings according to their transactions page.

The Rangers have signed free-agent right-hander Mason Thompson to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Round Rock. For Thompson, it’s a homecoming; the 27-year-old is a native of Round Rock.

Thompson was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the third round of the 2016 draft.

Thompson made his Major League debut with San Diego on June 22, 2021, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He pitched one-third of an inning in his debut, issuing one walk.

On July 30, 2021, he was traded to the Washington Nationals for RHP Daniel Hudson.

Thompson’s 2025 campaign was a struggle, as he posted an 11.81 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 10.2 innings. He spent time on the IL with Right biceps tendinitis.

Over parts of four MLB seasons (2021–23, 2025), he carries a career 5.21 ERA across 114 innings pitched. According to Statcast, Thompson depends on a five-pitch mix, relying heavily on his sinker (41.0%) and slider (33.5%), rounded out by a four-seamer (17.6%), curveball (5.0%), and changeup (2.9%).

The Rangers also signed free agent RHP Austin Bergner to a minor league contract. He has currently been assigned to Double-A Frisco. The 28-year-old, was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 9th round in 2019. He is still looking to make his Major League debut.

Bergner's minor league career has been defined by his dominance at the Double-A level, where he has maintained a stellar 2.96 ERA over 282.2 innings. However, that success hasn't yet translated to the next level; across parts of four seasons in Triple-A, he has struggled to an 8.39 ERA in 88 innings.

The 2025 season followed a similar trend for the righty. Minus the walks, he was sharp in Double-A, posting a 3.07 ERA with 39 walks and 90 strikeouts through 91 innings, but didn't have the same success during a brief stint with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens, where he had a 9.00 ERA in his limited six innings of work.
