Texas Rangers Sign First-Round Pick Gavin Fien

Texas Rangers Sign First-Round Pick Gavin Fien

The Texas Rangers announced that they have signed their first-round pick, Gavin Fien last night on X.

Jim Callis posted on X, the 18-year-old shortstop signed for a $4.8MM bonus which is less than the slot value of $5,746,800 but — enough to keep him from his commitment to Texas.

The Rangers will surely use the savings towards signing one of the other high school players they selected in the Draft.

Gavin Fien sparked plenty of debate among draft experts prior to the draft. The Athletic’s Keith Law ranked the 6’3″ right-handed hitter as the No. 12 prospect, MLB Pipeline had him at 22nd, with Baseball America (31st) and FanGraphs (34th) seeing him as a borderline first-rounder.

Most scouts agree that Fien won’t stick at shortstop, likely shifting to third base, though FanGraphs suggests a corner outfield spot could be in his future.

Rangers scouting director Kip Fagg says the Rangers will start Fien at shortstop, but the player development team will call the shots long-term, and we know the Texas Rangers aren't shy about keeping tall shortstops at that spot — see no. 1 ranked prospect Sebastian Walcott — who is listed at 6'4.

Fien had one of the best high school bats in the Draft. This season he hit .358/.456/.600/1.056 with 5 home runs, 16 RBI, 24 runs, 8 SB, walks (11), strikeouts (9) in 30 games played.

With Gavin Fien now inked as a Ranger, fans are ready to watch him carve his path through the farm system and chase big-league dreams.
