Hub City Spartanburgers: Late Rally Falls Short in 6-5 Loss

The Hub City Spartanburgers saw their two-game home winning streak come to an end with a 6-5 loss to the Wilmington Blue Rocks at Fifth Third Park, despite a late-inning rally.

Rough Start for Bonzagni

The Spartanburgers fell into an early 4-0 hole after starter Paul Bonzagni (L, 0-1) struggled, lasting only 2/3 of an inning. Bonzagni allowed 3 hits, 4 runs (3 earned), 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts, throwing 31 pitches (19 strikes).

Bormie Keeps the Game Close

Reliever Wilian Bormie came in and kept the Spartanburgers in the game, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing just 1 hit, 1 walk, and recording 2 strikeouts.

Keith Jones II Sparks the Rally

In the bottom of the 6th, trailing 6-1, Keith Jones II ignited the comeback with his first minor league home run, a 2-run shot, making the score 6-3.

8th-Inning Push Falls Short

In the bottom of the 8th, with the score 6-3 and 1 out, Quincy Scott drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in a run, making it 6-4. Theo Hardy followed with a groundout that scored Gleider Figuereo, bringing the score to 6-5. However, with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 2 outs, Danyer Cueva grounded out to first, ending the rally and the Spartanburgers’ chances.

Bonzagni’s Short Outing

Paul Bonzagni’s brief stint put the team in an early deficit, but his 2 strikeouts showed flashes of potential despite the rough outcome.

Bormie’s Solid Relief

Wilian Bormie’s 3.1 innings of strong relief gave the Spartanburgers a chance to mount their late comeback, allowing just 1 hit and keeping the Blue Rocks’ offense in check.
