The Texas Rangers assigned Josh Owens to Low-A Hickory.

The 18-year-old, selected in the third round (84th) of this year's MLB Draft, is a two-way player— not something we see everyday.

Most scouts don't expect the two-way experiment to stick, seeing more upside and a clearer path to the big leagues as a position player.

From Draft Day to the Diamond

Josh Owens is officially a pro, and his journey starts with the Hickory Crawdads — the Texas Rangers Low-A affiliate! The 6-foot-3 left handed bat is also a right-handed pitcher.

The Crawdads announced on social media that he's slated to be the designated hitter for his first professional game tonight against the Columbia Fireflies (Royals).

The anticipation builds as his first start on the mound is scheduled for Friday.

A Glimpse into the Future

The Rangers' system now has two different two-way players. Owens joins Seong-Jun Kim, another highly-touted prospect, in what could be the start of a new trend in player development.

His journey is just beginning and we'll keep you posted on his progress.
