The Texas Rangers get four prospects from the Yankees for Joey Gallo. None of them were the top 10 prospects in the Yankees system to start the season but the Rankings have since been updated and you might be surprised.
Initial reports indicated the Yankees were sending the Rangers 6 prospects for Gallo. They were initially reported to be: Trevor Hauver, Glenn Otto, Ezequiel Duran, Everson Pereira, Randy Vasquez and Josh Smith.
However, that was since revised to these four: RHP Glenn Otto, 2B Ezekiel Duran, SS Josh Smith and 2B/OF Trevor Hauver. Neither team has announced it officially yet.
At first glance, I wasn’t sure about the haul the Rangers are getting. It’s way to early to grade this trade for the Rangers although we know people are going to do it. None of these guys are Jasson Dominguez but that doesn’t mean this wasn’t a good trade for the Rangers.
Let’s take a closer look at each of these four players.
RHP Glenn Otto: NYY # 20 Prospect
Otto, 25, is a native Texan. He started this season with the Yankees Double-A affiliate, the Somerset Patriots. In his 65.1 innings in AA, he struckout 103 batters he faced. That’s good for 14.2 strikeouts per 9 innings.
He since has promoted to AAA and made two starts. In 10.1 innings he is averaging 10.5 strikeouts per 9 innings. We will likely see him start in Round Rock this weekend.
2B Ezequiel Duran: NYY # 6 Prospect
Duran, 22, has had a solid season for the Hudson Valley Renegades, which is the High-A affiliate of the Yankees. He recently hit for the cycle. Click here to watch the clips.
In 67 games, he’s hit for a line of .290/.374/.533/.907 with 12 home runs, 48 RBI, 28 walks and 71 strikeouts. Obviously the strikeouts would be cause for concern but otherwise has had a solid season.
SS Josh Smith: NYY # 8 Prospect
Soon Smith will be 24 years old. He bats left-handed and throws right-handed.
Between Low-A and High-A for the Yankees, Josh Smith has hit for a .324 average with a 1.089 OPS, 9 home runs and 24 RBI. The Yankees drafted Smith in the 2nd round of the 2019 draft
He is now assigned to the High-A Hickory Crawdads.
2B/OF Trevor Hauver: NYY # 22 Prospect
Hauver, 22, bats from the left side of the plate and throws right-handed. He was assigned to the Tampa Tarpons, the Low-A affiliate of the Yankees. He was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2020 draft by the Yankees.
In his 66 games he slashed a line of .288/.445/.498/.943 with 9 home runs and 49 RBI. He walked 64 times and struckout 78 times.
