Rangers Player and Prospects Participating in Winter Leagues

Ezequiel Durán and several Texas Rangers prospects are playing in the Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Australian leagues.

Durán Continues Strong Showing in the Dominican Republic

Texas Rangers infielder Ezequiel Durán, 26, is playing with the Aguilas Cibaenas in the Dominican Winter League. In 31 games, Durán has shown significant production with a .357/.440/.504 slash line and a .924 OPS.

His line includes two homers, 21 RBI, and nine doubles. For comparison, Durán hit 14 doubles in 90 games with the Rangers during the 2025 season. He has walked 12 times and struck out 17 times.

Durán is a candidate for the everyday second base role with the Rangers in 2026. Other potential candidates for the position include Josh Smith, Cody Freeman, Michael Helman, and Sam Haggerty.

Arturo Disla has played three games

Arturo Disla, 25, has played only three games with the Aguilas Cibaenas in the Dominican Winter League. In his limited plate appearances, the prospect has recorded a .182/.182/.273 slash line with a .455 OPS, including one double. He has recorded four strikeouts.

Ortiz Excels in Puerto Rico

Rangers prospect Abimelec Ortiz has been impressive in the Puerto Rican Winter League. The first baseman/outfielder, who will turn 24 in February, was recently added to the Texas Rangers’ 40-man roster in November to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft that took place during the Winter Meetings in December.

Ortiz, the Rangers No. 18-ranked prospect, has posted a batting line of .272/.450/.395 for an .846 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) over 24 games. He has hit two home runs and driven in 13 runs (RBI).

Notably, Ortiz has walked 25 times against only seven strikeouts.

Perry Pitches in Australian Baseball League

Right-handed pitcher Kamdyn Perry, 20, is pitching for the Brisbane Bandits in the Australian Baseball League. Perry, drafted in the 17th round in 2023, has struggled with a 10.91 earned run average (ERA) over 15 2/3 innings.

He has allowed 10 walks and recorded eight strikeouts, with his performance translating to 14.9 hits per nine innings and a 2.298 walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP).

Former Prospect Hatcher in Puerto Rican Action

Josh Hatcher, 27, a former Rangers prospect who was released by the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders on Aug. 10, is also playing in the Puerto Rican Winter League with the Gigantes de Carolina.

In 26 games, the outfielder has a .217/.305/.361 slash line, resulting in a .667 OPS. He has hit three home runs and totaled nine RBI.

Hatcher was drafted by the Rangers in the 10th round of the 2022 draft. Over his four-season minor league career, he has hit .260/.304/.398 for a .701 OPS with 35 home runs and 187 RBI.

Other Rangers news

Right-hander Merrill Kelly has agreed to a two-year $40 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The annual average value is higher than expected, but his return to the Diamondbacks is not shocking.

This signing does make the trade that sent LHP Kohl Drake, LHP Mitch Bratt, and RHP David Hagaman to the Diamondbacks for Kelly sting a little more, given the right-hander was with the Rangers for only part of the 2025 season before leaving via free agency.

Perhaps Chris Young and company can make up for the loss by signing left-hander Ranger Suárez or right-hander Zac Gallen.
