Today was the deadline for qualifying offers to be accepted or rejected (Martín Pérez accepted) by players and it was also the deadline for teams to add any prospects to their 40-man roster for protection from the Rule-5 Draft coming in December. The Rangers added 6 players to their 40-man roster for protection from the 2022 Rule-5 draft.
The number by the name is where they rank in the Rangers system by MLB website.
#4 RHP Owen White, #7 INF Luisangel Acuna, #9 OF Dustin Harris, #10 RHP Cole Winn, #21 INF Jonathan Ornelas, #25 RHP Zak Kent.
RHP Owen White had a 9-2 win-loss record in 15 games with a 3.59 ERA between High A Hickory and AA Frisco. He dealt with an injury that kept him sidelined for weeks but ultimately the Rangers couldn’t take a chance of losing their top pitching prospect.
INF Luisangel Acuña is the younger borther of the Braves star, Ronald Acuna but he lives by his own skill. He’s got a quick bat and plays strong defense. Acuña slashed for a .277 average 11 HR, 47 RBI, 40 SB between Hickory and Frisco.
OF Dustin Harris came over in the Mike Minor trade with the A’s, who would probably love to have him back right about now. Dustin hit for a .257 avg, with 17 HR, 66 RBI and 19 SB between Hickory and Frisco.
RHP Cole Winn didn’t have the season that anyone expected. He went 9-8 in 28 games with a 6.51 ERA with Round Rock.
INF Jonathan Ornelas 2018 3rd Rd 91 overall. Jonathan hit .299 AVG, 14 Hr 64 RBI and 14 Sb with Frisco. He had a fantastic season, tying the RoughRiders single season hit record with 157, which also led the Texas League.
RHP Zak Kent went 3-4 in 24 games with a 3.94 ERA between Frisco and Round Roc with an improved ERA in his limited Triple-A outings.
There are some other very intriguing names that the Rangers did not protect including: LHP Cody Bradford, LHP Antoine Kelly, RHP Mason Englert, Blaine Crim and the list goes on.
Congratulations from The Prospect Times!
