Mason Englert’s Double-A debut couldn’t have gone any better. He managed to shut down the Sod Poodles where the ball is known to fly out of the park. It’s not a friendly park to pitchers.
The RoughRiders line-up also broke a couple of franchise records. They scored eleven runs in the top of the 5th inning for the most runs scored in an inning.
After the top of the 6th they had tallied 20 runs. They ended the game with a new-high of 21 runs which is the most runs in franchise history. I’m not surprised with the fire-power of this line-up.
Going back to Englert for a second…he pitched 5 impressive innings, allowing one unearned run on 5 hits and struckout 7. He issued no walks. He hit up to a 94 MPH on the fastball and threw some beautiful breaking balls.
The Sod Poodles line-up only managed just a couple of hard-hit balls off Englert and the one unearned run came after a fielding error by Justin Foscue.
Mason Englert’s line: 5ip, 1r, 0er, 7so. He threw a total of 79 pitches/56 for strikes. He got his first AA win in his AA debut.
*The boxscore was updated after the game and the error committed by Justin Foscue was turned into a hit so Englert gave up one earned run.
The RoughRiders have a 46-19 record in games where they score first.
The RoughRiders line-up pummeled the Sod Poodles pitching staff tonight.
Among the highlights at the plate:
- Blaine Crim: 5-for-6 with a home run, 2 RBI, 2 doubles, and 2 singles. The 5 hits tie a career-high for Crim and he is toed with most hits in a game with Odubel Herrera (2013).
- Justin Foscue: 3-for-6 with 2 HR’s, 4 RBI. This was Foscue’s first multi-HR game of the season.
- Aaron Zavala: 3-for-4 with a home run, 2 RBI, 2 walks.
As a team they scored 21 runs on 23 hits, including 8 home runs hit by 7 different players.
Seven RoughRiders had a multi-hit game and all nine batters in the line-up reached base.
Out of the pen
Left-hander Josh Smith pitched one inning allowing one earned run on two hits, and struckout two.
Right-hander Kevin Gowdy threw two scoreless innings and struckout 5 of the 6 batters he faced.
Grant Wolfram pitched the 9th. He gave up two hits but held the Sod Poodles scoreless.
The RoughRiders win 21-2.
With this win the RoughRiders maintain first place by one game in the 2nd half with a 30-24 record. They need to keep the pedal to the metal to make the postseason with only 14 games remaining.
Up next
Game 5 of the 6-game series is tomorrow with left-hander Avery Weems set to take the mound for the RoughRiders.
First pitch is set for 7:05 PM Central.
