Ryan Garcia seems to be a name that has fallen off the radar of many Texas Rangers fans. Afterall, the Rangers selected the right-hander in the 2nd round of the 2019 draft.
The UCLA product pitched 5 professional innings in 2019. Then in 2020 had the dreaded Tommy John surgery that Rangers fans have become accustomed to.
Of course, Covid knocked out the 2020 season for every minor leaguer.
In 2022 for the first time since July 14, 2019; a span of nearly two years, Garcia took the mound for the Down East Wood Ducks. He pitched lights out in the 14 games he appeared in. He pitched 12 games with Low-A Down East and 2 with High-A Hickory.
For the season, he had a 2-2 win-loss record with a 1.91 earned run average. In 56.2 innings, he allowed only 33 hits and struckout 74. He averaged a walk rate of 3.3 walks per 9 innings.
Opposing batters hit for an average of .166 and .497 OPS with lefties being held to a .115 average.
He is due to make his Double-A debut against the San Antonio Missions in San Antonio on Tuesday. He’s hit up to 96 quite a few times on the gun and he’ll be limited to about 75 pitches.
His time in High-A was limited, but he held lower-level batters in check last year and he just turned 25, so a move to Double-A makes perfect sense.
If Ryan Garcia fell off your radar, you might want to consider putting him back on it.
