Frisco RoughRiders Home Opener Recap

The Riders are off to a hot start to the AA season. They are off to a 3-0 start after a sweep of the Corpus Christi Hooks (Houston Astros AA affiliate). Josh Trentadue (our No. 18 prospect ) will toe the hill in the home opener for the Riders tonight.

First Inning: Josh Trentadue tosses a scoreless inning on five pitches. He recorded two fly outs to center field, and Jake Snider made a slick diving catch in left field to end the inning. In the bottom half of the inning Frainyer Chavez lines a double into the left-center field gap to leadoff the inning, but the Riders did not cash in on the lead off double. The score is 0-0 going into the top of the 2nd.

Second Inning: Trentadue tosses another scoreless inning on 13 pitches. He got two strikeouts in the inning. Ian Moller reached on an infield single in the bottom half of the inning with two out. Tucker Mitchell then grounded out to end the inning

Third Inning: Trentadue notches another scoreless frame on 16 pitches. The inning ended on a 6-4-3 double play from the middle infield. In the bottom of the inning Jake Snider goes down on strikes. RockHounds Pitcher Kenya Huggins walks the bases loaded on three straight batters then issues another walk, and allows a run to score. Jorge Marcheco is on to pitch for the RockHounds. Orlando Martinez greets the new pitcher with a first pitch single up the middle to extend the Riders lead 2-0. Marcus Lee Sang inside-outs a single to left field to plate two more runs for the Riders. Tucker Mitchell plates two more runs for the Riders on a single blooped to center field with two outs.

Fourth Inning: The RockHounds made Josh Trentadue work a little bit this inning, but he only allows one run on 1 hit, 1 walk, and a wild pitch where the run scored. The Riders got a run across the plate in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly from John Taylor to extend the Riders lead 7-1.

Fifth Inning: Wilian Bormie is on to pitch for Frisco. He tossed a scoreless inning allowing no hits and two swinging strikeouts. In the bottom half of the inning catcher Ian Moller hits a no-doubt homer to left field and extends the lead for Frisco 8-1.

Sixth Inning: Bormie is out for another inning of work and was efficient. He only threw 10 pitches in the inning and notched his third strike out of the night. The Riders had some traffic on the bases but they failed to push any runs across. Keyber Rodriguez and John Taylor both had singles in the inning.

Seventh Inning: Zach Bryant replaced Wilian Bormie at the beginning of the inning. Bryant followed with a quick, efficient inning of his own, needing just nine pitches to deliver a scoreless frame. Bryant got RockHounds DH Clark Elliot to strike out swinging, and got two ground outs to Keyber Rodriguez. The Riders scratched another run across the board after a double from Tucker Mitchell, an error from the first baseman, and leadoff man Frainyer Chavez hit a sac fly to right field. Frisco extended their lead over Midland 9-1.

Eighth Inning: Austin Roberts entered the game in the 8th and tossed a scoreless frame. He got the first hitter down on strikes, then walked the 9-hole hitter, and got the RockHounds leadoff hitter to ground into a 5-4-3 double play. The 3, 4, and 5 hitters for Frisco had a quiet bottom half of the frame with a couple ground outs and a strikeout.

Ninth Inning: Ryan Lobus was called onto close this game out, and did so in 15 pitches. To begin his frame Ryan got the number 4 prospect in baseball to strike out, and then got two ground balls to close out the 9th inning.

The RoughRiders won their Home Opener 9-1 over the Midland RockHounds (A's).

What stood out-

Pitching was outstanding. Particularly Josh Trentadue, Wilian Bormie, and Ryan Lobus. Trentadue was dealing tonight, his fastball sat 94–95 with strong carry, producing great results. The secondaries were also good tonight. Wilian Bormie was lighting up the radar gun sitting 97 and 98 on the fastball. He also had a 44% whiff rate thanks to his cutter he pairs with the high 90's fastball he throws. Ryan Lobus is a guy who I have watched the past year or two, and he's always fun to watch because of the low arm slot. Not to mention the insane movement on his slider, the fastball also grants him some success. I think Lobus can potentially get the call to the big leagues this year and come out of the bullpen.
