RoughRiders win 4-3

Tonight is the night. I am covering my first Frisco RoughRiders game of the year in person. Just to be clear, this is not my first RoughRiders game.

I am blessed to be able to get credentialed to cover some games. So here we are. Everything I’ve dreamed about and done over the last year with criswellscc.com (blog no longer exists) has led to this. I am especially grateful for the RoughRiders allowing me to do this.

Let me say I am not a professional scout so what you read here is just my opinion.

Girl Scout Night – Saturday April 6th

This was the 3rd game of the series against the Midland RockHounds- the Double-A team of the Oakland Athletics. The Athletics have 5 of their MLB top 30 prospects.

Greg Deichmann (RF) # 11

Luis Barrera (CF) # 13

Kevin Merrell (SS) # 17

Parker Dunshee (SP) # 18

Jonah Heim (C) # 29

The RoughRiders have 3 of their top prospects here and if you guessed it was the 3 headed monster at the top of the rotation, you guessed right.

Jonathan Hernandez

Brock Burke

Joe Palumbo who pitches Sunday (tomorrow).

RoughRiders SP

Emerson Martinez

I’ve never seen him in person before tonight. My first impression was he was sharp and throwing strikes. This kid literally cruised for the first 2 innings but ran into trouble in the 3rd. That is when the RockHounds put all 3 on the board.

Here is more of a breakdown by the innings:

1st: 14 pitches, 9 for strikes. He struck out 1 looking and 1 swinging.

2nd: 11 pitches, 9 for strikes. Allowed 1 hit and struck out 1 looking. Side note: he is working fast.

3rd: 19 pitches? allowed 2 quick hits, the first was just fair down the line and the first 1st out was a pop out in the infield. Then a fielders choice. A 2 run HR to Luis Barrera the Athletics # 13 prospect. Then a ground-out.

4th: 1 strikeout, 11 pitches, 7 strikes.

5th: 29 pitches, allowed 2 hits and a walk.

Final Line: 5.2 IP, 3 runs on 6 hits, 2 BB and 4 Strikeouts. He threw 84 pitches, 51 of those were strikes.

Bullpen

Jefferson Medina got the last out in the top of 6th, 5 pitches, 2 for strikes.

Medina ended up pitching 1.1 scoreless innings, striking out 1. He threw 19 pitches, 11 of those were strikes.

James Jones, the ex-Mariner outfielder pitched a scoreless top of the 8th. He allowed 1 hit.

Blake Bass earned his 1st save of the season with a scoreless top of the 9th. He struck out 2 and threw 13 pitches, 8 for strikes.

As a whole only 2 batters were walked.

offense

In the bottom of the 2nd the Riders got 3 consecutive singles. Had a fly out, striking out swinging.

Michael De Leon hit a single but was thrown out stretching it into a double. He went 2-3 with 2 RBI and is hitting .375.

2nd baseman Christian Lopes was 1-4 with 1 RBI and is hitting .222.

Local product (from Dallas) Preston Beck had an 0-4 night.

Tony Sanchez went 2-4 and is hitting .500

Anthony Cordero 1B was 2-4 on the night as well.

Eliezer Alvarez drew a 10 pitch walk.

The game lasted 2 hours and 30 minutes and the paid attendance was 9,060. Fun night overall and it’s always good for the home team to get a win. Thank you again RoughRiders!

Post Game Fireworks

After the game there were fireworks and I stuck around to see a few and Overall had a great experience!

Now we go tomorrow for Joe Palumbo’s first outing of the year at 4:05 PM CST.
