RoughRiders Crush Missions 8-1, Spartanburgers and Crawdads Shine

Out of the first-half Texas League South race, the Frisco RoughRiders (38-30) played with fire Sunday, demolishing the San Antonio Missions 8-1 at Nelson Wolff Stadium. The win paved the way for the Midland RockHounds to clinch the division title, but Frisco’s bats and arms sent a message for the second half.
Offensive Explosion Powers Frisco
The RoughRiders erupted for 8 runs on 11 hits. INF Abimelec Ortiz led the charge, going 2-for-5 with 3 RBI and 1 run. OF Luis Mieses smashed his 10th HR of the season, finishing 2-for-5 with 1 RBI and 1 run. C Tucker Mitchell dazzled, going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and 2 stolen bases. INF Keyber Rodriguez went 2-for-5 with 2 runs and a stolen base, while INF Cam Cauley, with 19 stolen bases this season after swiping 2, went 1-for-3 with 2 walks and 2 runs. INF Sebastian Walcott added a 1-for-4 effort with a walk, keeping Frisco’s prospect-heavy lineup humming.
Supak and Bullpen Dominate
RHP Trey Supak set the tone, tossing 5 IP, allowing 1 R on 5 H with 8 SO, lowering his ERA to 4.30. The bullpen locked it down, combining for 4 shutout innings with 3 walks and 6 SO. Missions’ RHP Luis Patiño took the loss, unable to contain Frisco’s relentless attack.
Round Rock Express Battles in Loss
The Round Rock Express (34-41) fell 10-8 to the Oklahoma City Comets in a 3-hour, 21-minute slugfest before 5,285 fans at 89 degrees. RHP Patrick Murphy (1-2, 4.41 ERA) took the loss, while RHP Landon Knack (2-0, 6.31 ERA) earned the win and RHP Sam Carlson notched his 3rd save.
Oklahoma City’s RF Esteury Ruiz went deep twice (5th and 6th HRs), hitting a 424-ft, 105.0 MPH shot to center in the 3rd and a 397-ft, 100.8 MPH homer to left in the 6th, finishing with 3 runs scored. CF James Outman added a 408-ft, 100.7 MPH solo HR to left in the 4th, driving in 2 runs. Round Rock’s SS Richie Martin belted a 355-ft, 95.2 MPH 3-run HR to left in the 4th, going 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. CF Dustin Harris launched a 385-ft, 96.1 MPH 2-run HR to right in the 4th, finishing 1-for-something with 2 RBI. 3B Cody Freeman went 2-for-5 with a double, 1 RBI, and 2 runs, marking his third straight multi-hit game. RF Kellen Strahm stole his 26th base, his third of the series. The Express rallied for 7 runs in the 4th but couldn’t overcome Oklahoma City’s 3-run 5th and Ruiz’s 6th-inning blast.
Hub City Spartanburgers Surge
The Hub City Spartanburgers (32-36) rolled to an 8-2 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods, improving to 1-2 in the second half. RHP Jose Gonzalez dazzled, tossing 6 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 6 SO, 76 pitches (51 strikes), with a 2.92 ERA. RHP Adonis Villavicencio earned the win with 1 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 SO, 20 pitches (12 strikes). RHP Eric Loomis (2.79 ERA) and RHP Joey Danielson (2.73 ERA) each threw a scoreless inning.
At the plate, OF Luis Marquez (.400) led with 3-for-4, 2 runs. OF Dylan Dreiling crushed a grand slam in the 9th, his 7th HR, sparking the rout. OF Quincy Scott (.201) hit his 3rd HR, going 1-for-4. INF Gleider Figuereo (.222) went 2-for-4 with a run, and OF Anthony Davis (.301) went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI.
Hickory Crawdads Rally Late
The Hickory Crawdads (36-IB, 3-0 in the second half) staged a comeback to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds (27-42) 8-5 at LP Frans Stadium, marking their sixth win in eight games. The 3-hour game, one of 2024’s longest, featured three ties and three lead changes under sweltering conditions.
In the pivotal 8th, INF Erick Alvarez walked, and 3B Marcos Torres hit a ground-rule double. DH Juan Sulbaran, debuting for Hickory, drove in Alvarez with a sac-fly for a 6-5 lead. OF Antonis Macias singled to score Torres, and Rafe Perich added a sac-fly for the 8-5 final. Macias and Torres combined for 4 of Hickory’s 8 hits. RHP Adrian Rodriguez (1-0) earned the win, while LHP Simon Leandro (2-3) took the loss. RHP Luke Savage notched his 5th save. Hickory’s 5-1 week against Delmarva pushed them four games over .500 for the first time this season.
