The Frisco RoughRiders (39-30, 1-0 second half) roared into the second half of the Texas League season, toppling the Tulsa Drillers 5-1 on Tuesday night at Riders Field. With a six-game series underway, Frisco’s lineup and stout pitching set the tone, leaving the Drillers (0-1, 26-44) in their dust.
RHP Ben Anderson anchored Frisco’s effort, tossing 6 innings, allowing 5 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 SO, with a balk, on 85 pitches (56 strikes). It marked his second 6-inning outing this season, stifling Tulsa’s bats. The bullpen sealed the deal: LHP Larson Kindreich (3.54 ERA) worked 1 IP, 1 H, 1 SO; RHP Gerardo Carrillo (5.68 ERA) allowed 1 R on 3 H in 1 IP; and RHP Ryan Lobus (3.86 ERA) threw 1 IP, 1 H, 1 SO, sealing the 5-1 victory.
Frisco’s bats delivered 10 hits, with INF Sebastian Walcott stealing the spotlight. The teenage phenom went 2-for-4 with 3 stolen bases—2 in the first inning alone—tying his career high and joining Elvis Andrus as the only Texas League teenagers since 2005 to swipe three bases in a game, per Rangers PR.
OF Marcus Smith provided the power, crushing his first Double-A HR, a 3-run shot, finishing 1-for-4 with 3 RBI. INF Frainyer Chavez went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI, while INF Keyber Rodriguez and C Ian Moller also recorded multiple hits, fueling Frisco’s attack.
Tulsa’s RHP Patrick Copen, a pitcher with an inspiring story, took the mound. After losing vision in his right eye from a line drive last August in High-A, Copen has thrived. With the Great Lakes Loons, he posted a 2.25 ERA in 48 innings, with 32 BB, 77 SO, and a 1.13 WHIP. At Double-A, he boasts a 2.66 ERA in 20.1 innings. Despite his resilience, Frisco’s offense proved too much. The Drillers’ lone run came in the 8th via C Griffin Lockwood-Powell’s RBI single, cutting the deficit to 5-1.
Frisco and Tulsa clash again Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at Riders Field, with LHP Kohl Drake (3-3, 2.74 ERA) set to take the mound. With prospects like Walcott and Drake leading the charge, the RoughRiders aim to build on their second-half momentum and keep the Riders Field faithful buzzing.
