Continuing our series where we highlight a Texas Rangers prospect in the Dominican Summer League (DSL), there is a new name that you will want to add to your list of players to keep a close eye on: Cesar Mateo.
The Texas Rangers signed the 17-year-old on January 15, 2026, for a reported bonus of $50K. Hailing from Baní, Dominican Republic, the right-handed hitting and throwing infielder stands 5'10" and is listed at 160 lbs. While he is naturally listed as a shortstop, he has spent the majority of his reps at second base this summer, alongside one appearance in the outfield.
Right now, Mateo’s performance is demanding attention. His blistering .398 batting average ranks third in the entire Dominican Summer League, backed by a ridiculous .509 on-base percentage. Through his first 22 games, he has put up at least one hit in all but four games.
His full 22-game slash line stands at an incredible .398/.509/.557 with a 1.066 OPS. Across those games, he has hit seven doubles, two triples, 16 RBIs, and one home run, which he launched off a right-handed pitcher. While he hasn’t hit for massive over-the-fence power just yet, he consistently sprays the ball to all parts of the field, leaving plenty of room to grow into more physical power as his frame fills out.
His advanced feel for the strike zone is nice to see for a player his age. Mateo possesses a 16.7% walk rate alongside a 15.8% strikeout rate, drawing 19 walks compared to 18 strikeouts. He is also carrying a high .472 BABIP (Batting Average on Balls in Play).
A Menace on the Basepaths
Once Mateo gets on base, he turns into an absolute nightmare for opposing catchers. His 28 stolen bases rank third overall in the league, giving the DSL Rangers Red an elite, base-stealing threat at the top of the lineup.
Athleticism and baseball instinct seem to run deep in his DNA; as his father has cousins who played the game professionally.
Rather than slowing down as the summer wears on, Mateo is actually finding another gear so far in July.
June: He hit .379/.476/.530 with a 1.006 OPS, an incredible stretch that earned him Position Player of the Month honors for the DSL Rangers Red.
July: So far this month, he is off to an even better start, hitting .455/.600/.636 with a 1.236 OPS across 30 plate appearances.
Mateo is turning into one of the most exciting young names to track at the foundational level of the Texas Rangers farm system and we'll keep you posted as the season progresses further along.
