Day 2 MLB 2022 Draft: Texas Rangers

Your Texas Rangers made quick work in Day 2 of the 2022 MLB Draft. The Rangers selected 3 right-handed pitchers, 3 outfielders and a shortstop.

They selected three High School players and one 4th year junior College player and one 4th year senior College player and two 5th year senior College players.

6th Rd (Tommy Specht)

With the 6th round pick, the #169 overall selection the Rangers picked Tommy Specht. Specht is an 18 year old outfielder from Wahlert HS in Iowa and he hits from the left hand side.

Tommy stands at 6’3, and 200 pounds and has committed to Kentucky. He is the #1 ranked player in the state of Iowa and 12th rank outfielder in the nation. Tommy recorded a 6.48 60 yr dash. Tommy is from the same town as Ian Moller, whom the Rangers drafted in 2021.

His assigned value for that slot is $314,200.

7th Rd (Luis Ramirez)

In the 7th round and the 199th overall pick the Rangers selected Luis Ramirez. Ramirez is a RHP from Long Beach State who was ranked as the #143 prospect. The 4th year junior had a strong Cape Cod league performance last summer which led him to big things this coming season.

Lingering Shoulder issues forced him to miss some starts. That didn’t stop his fastball which averaged around 92 mph and will touch up to 94-95 with a ton a sink on it. That’s what gives him a 60% ground-ball rate.

Luis slider hovers 79-80 Mph. The only red flags that Luis has is his missing Friday night starts. His assigned value is $244,800.

8th Rd (Matt Brosky)

With the 8th pick (229 overall) the Rangers selected Matt Brosky, RHP from Youngstown State in Ohio. Matt Brosky stands at 5’10 and 190 pounds.

In 2022 Matt made a team high 15 starts and was named Horizon league Pitcher of the year. Matt finished with a 6-7 record with 2.65 ERA and 5 complete games and 1 shutout in 98.2 innings.

Matt Struck out 102 batters while walking 22. Opposing batters had a .231 AVG. His assigned value is $194k.

9th Rd (Griffin Cheney)

With the 9th pick (259 overall) the Rangers selected SS Griffin Cheney. Cheney is a right-handed batter from Georgia State U. He is a 5th year senior. In 2022, Griffin was named ABCA/Rawlings All-Southeast Region. In 53 games/197 at-bats, Griffin had .350 avg, .445 OBP, .640 SLG with 16 homers, 38 RBI and 12 steals. His assigned value is $166k.

10th Rd (John Hatcher)

With the 10th pick (289 overall) the Rangers selected outfielder John Hatcher who stands at 6-2, 200 pounds. Hatcher is a left-handed batter from Kennesaw State GA.

Among Josh’s awards are Collegiate Baseball 3rd team All-American, Hattiesburg Regional All-Tourament. In 64 games, Josh hit for a .391 AVG, 1.119 OPS, .667 SLG.

This is a successful draft especially if the Rangers are able to sign 4th round pick Brock Porter who is expected to command a value over-slot.
