Seong-Jun Kim Touches 97 in Hickory Crawdads Debut

Seong-Jun Kim made his full-season affiliate debut tonight (August 19, 2026), starting on the mound for the Low-A Hickory Crawdads against the Shorebirds. It's the latest step for the two-way player whose profile has become more interesting to me with each look.

On the mound, Kim's final line from the debut:

2.0 IP / 0 R / 1 H / 4 SO / 7 whiffs

28/18 strikes

He touched 97 on the radar gun during the outing, sitting 95-96 with the fastball for most of the appearance and mixing in a changeup and curveball.

Based on what I've tracked across his appearances, the Rangers have kept him on a 2-inning cap so far. He hasn't pitched more than 2 innings in any outing this season, suggesting a deliberate workload plan as he's brought along.

During the ACL season, Kim slashed .303/.419/.546/.964 with 7 home runs, 34 RBIs, 24 walks and 8 stolen bases. On the mound during that stretch, his innings were limited but he posted a 1.08 ERA across 8.2 innings with 5 walks and 10 strikeouts, a 10.4 SO/9 rate.

According to MLB Pipeline, scouts are divided on where his long-term future lies, with some seeing him as the better fit at the plate, others preferring his arm.

At 19 years old, Kim still has time to make his case to stick as a two-way player before that decision has to be made.

The Rangers signed Kim as a free agent on May 19, 2025 and he currently sits as the Rangers' No. 8 prospect.
