Add The Prospect Times on GoogleThe Round Rock Express' 2026 season wrapped up Sunday, which means Sebastian Walcott, the Texas Rangers' No. 1 prospect and No. 9 prospect in MLB according to MLB Pipeline, has closed the book on his own 2026 season after returning from internal brace surgery on the UCL in his right elbow, which he underwent in February.
He missed time, but he didn't miss a beat once he was back, first as a designated hitter and later at shortstop. Let's take a look at his incredible season since returning.
The Prospect Times
ACL Rangers rehab stint
Walcott began his return with the ACL Rangers, playing two games before he was reinstated from the injured list and sent to Frisco. In Arizona, he slashed .500/.571/1.167 with a 1.738 OPS, a home run, a stolen base and a walk.
A stronger Walcott
When Walcott first returned to Frisco, Zach Bigley reported that he had added about 20 pounds. I could clearly see the difference. He had gained more muscle, and he had made changes in the box that helped him produce more power.
The results backed that up. Walcott finished the regular season with 10 home runs between the ACL Rangers and Frisco, three shy of matching his career high of 13, and he did it in just 41 games this season, compared to the 124 games he played for Frisco in 2025.
Frisco regular season
Walcott rejoined the Frisco RoughRiders in mid-July. Over 37 games and 171 plate appearances, he slashed .322/.398/.586 with 9 home runs, 20 RBI and 17 walks. He also stole 11 bases and was not caught stealing during the regular season. He tore up the Texas League during those 37 games.
All but one of those games came at designated hitter. The exception was the RoughRiders regular-season finale, when he played shortstop for 5.0 innings before Luke Hanson pinch hit for him in the top of the sixth and took over at short in the bottom of the inning.
I thought Walcott looked sharp in that stretch at shortstop. He handled a handful of chances, charged a couple of balls, transferred cleanly from glove to hand, and made the throw each time. One throw came in low, but first baseman Arturo Disla scooped it to complete the play.
Texas League Division Series
In the Division Series against the Amarillo Sod Poodles, Walcott slashed .364/.533/.636 with a 1.170 OPS over three games. He hit a home run, drew four walks and stole four bases. The home run was his first postseason hit in a RoughRiders uniform, and the scoreboard at Riders Field showed an exit velocity of 107.04 mph. He played shortstop in all three games.
Promotion to Round Rock
After the RoughRiders were eliminated in Game 3, the Rangers promoted Walcott to Triple-A Round Rock. Per Rylan Kobre, Walcott was just the eighth position player in Express franchise history to make his Triple-A debut under 20 years and 200 days old.
In two games there, he slashed .250/.333/.250 with a .583 OPS, one walk, one stolen base and four strikeouts. Both of his hits were singles, and one of them left the bat at 101.7 mph, per MiLB At Bat. With Triple-A tracking data available, his hardest-hit ball of Sunday's game came on a groundout, at 108.7 mph.
Total season stats
Across the ACL Rangers, Frisco and Round Rock, Walcott hit .325/.401/.590 with a .991 OPS, 10 home runs, 21 RBI, 13 stolen bases and 19 walks in 41 games. It's the kind of season that makes fans excited for what's to come.
Will Walcott be called up?
A lot of fans wanted Walcott to be called up to give the Rangers' lineup a spark. In my opinion, he isn't likely to get the call. If he isn't on the 40-man roster, he would continue to work with the organization's coaches and staff during any work stoppage next season. If there was no threat of a lockout, I think we're looking at Walcott making his MLB debut this season.
If there is a 2027 season, I think Walcott is really likely to make his debut. Then it's worth the conversation with Seager about a move from shortstop. That's got to be a conversation the Rangers have sooner rather than later.
What the sample does and doesn't tell us
The regular-season line covers 171 plate appearances, the playoff line covers three games and the Round Rock line covers two, so all of these are small samples. What the numbers do show is that Walcott returned from a significant elbow procedure and produced with power, patience and speed. I am probably more excited than ever about his potential.
It isn't clear yet what his next step will be. He could be added to an Arizona Fall League roster, the Dominican Winter League could be an option, or he could simply have a normal offseason. We'll find out soon enough.
During media day in 2025, Walcott told media, "People think baseball is boring and I'm here to show people it's not."
He's certainly keeping his word on that.
