Dallas, TX – Day two of the Winter Meetings December 10, 2024. It’s safe to say that the stove has been turned on for our Texas Rangers.
Nathan Eovaldi Signing: The Texas Rangers have just inked a deal with starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi to keep him in a Rangers uniform for 3 years at $75 million. This deal solidifies Eovaldi as the number 2 starter in the Rangers’ rotation, providing certainty to the pitching staff right behind Jacob deGrom, giving the team a heck of a 1-2 punch. Eovaldi was one of the instrumental players in leading the Rangers to their first-ever World Series Championship in Arlington in 2023. With Eovaldi back on board, the Rangers’ rotation is 8 deep, including:
Acquisition of Jake Burger: In another significant move, the Rangers have traded for power-hitting infielder Jake Burger from the Miami Marlins. The Rangers send three prospects to the Marlins: infield prospects Echedry Vargas and Max Acosta, along with pitching prospect Brayan Mendoza. Burger, controllable until 2029, brings much-needed power to the lineup with his 2024 stats of 29 home runs, a batting line of .250/.301/.460/.760, but with a modest bWAR of 0.5. Prospects exist to make your major league team better, and in this case, they’ve been leveraged to add a power bat to the Rangers’ lineup.
MLB Draft Lottery: Looking back at the MLB Draft Lottery from 2022, the Rangers had moved up to land the 4th overall pick in 2023, which they used to select Wyatt Langford. However, in the 2025 Draft Lottery, the Rangers’ dropped four spots from 8th to 12th. We’ll have more on who they could potentially select in the coming weeks.
Sound off….how do you feel about the Burger trade?
